It can be confusing to start the work of getting to know your Interior Life.
How do you catch a thought?
How do you feel through an emotion?
How do you slow down your mind?
Where do you even start?
Truth be told I don't think most of us know ourselves very well, and when I say that I mean that we don't know our story, our strengths, our triggers or why we prefer one thing and not the other. Thomas Aquinas says that "you cannot love what you do not know", which implies that if we don't know ourselves very well, then we cannot love ourselves very well.
Do you want to be able to love yourself better? To be able to treat yourself kindly and talk to yourself the way you would a good friend whom you love deeply?
I'm sure you do! I definitely do!
You may be someone who struggles to love themselves, to cut themselves some slack, to give themselves a little grace, or perhaps you do pretty okay at that but struggle to lead with compassion and curiosity in a major relationship in your life and you know the palpable tension all too well.
Doing this work can help you connect the dots as to why you act the way you act or do the things you do despite wanting to act differently. This work allows us to understand ourselves in a deep and profound way -
to know ourselves.
To know yourself naturally leads the way to compassion, which leads to patience with ourselves which then increases our capacity to hold space for our imperfections and in so doing, we will have a greater capacity to do so for others.
In short, it frees us up to love, both ourselves and other people.
We have been commanded "to love our neighbor as ourself." To love, the universal vocation of the church, is the greatest calling on all of our lives, so why don't we all jump at the chance to get to know our Interior Life, to increase our capacity to love? Because, facing areas of pain and unmet need can be scary.
I bet there are places in your heart where you find yourself hesitating to do this work. Thoughts going through your mind that this sounds like a lot, that might be a thing for someone else but not for you or asking yourself if it's really necessary.
And if that's you, it makes total sense and I wonder if you can muster up a little curiosity and ask yourself "why the resistance?"
We fail at love. We fail often. But the struggle of loving of ourselves and the loving of others is unavoidable in this life so I would encourage you to consider giving this work a try.
Yes we fail, but the good news is that we have an avenue for repair, to try again, to get back up, to persevere, and I want to begin that work with you.
Come try it out. See how gentle this work is. See how easy it is to engage with your own interior life and be encouraged by others doing the same.
Starting August 27th at Noon CST and every other Tuesday from that point on, we will be actively doing this work in a live coaching hour in the
In the community, you will learn how to get in touch with your thoughts and emotions, how to see them in a new light, how to honor them, and get curious about them. You will learn to have compassion for yourself in areas of failure and see them as a sure avenue to your heavenly Father.
Finally we will ultimately get to the work of identifying the false understandings we have of ourselves and of God. Implicit beliefs we hold of which we are not immediately aware, about who He is and who we are in His eyes. We get to walk together and uncover lies we believe which keep us from His goodness and love.
Join me on this journey. It is beautiful. It is gentle. It is worth it!
